Back! Unless we’re a group and someone has to go front. Anecdote: Once ordered Uber Select at Singapore airport and I got a MAYBACH! Dude was headed home for the night and so just wanted the next fare possible so he volunteered his Lux for the Select pool. Now THAT’S a backseat.

Here’s a bunch of human scenarios: 1. you’re drinking 2. Parking is difficult where you’re going 3. You need to finish some emails on the way 4. You’re arriving at, or going to an airport. I mean I can think of dozens more but I’m genuinely curious to know why none of these would ever apply to you.

If it was rank and file setting up a sting, this could blow up into something dumb and noisy. Ironically if it was local politicians pushing for it, it’ll just blow over - I hope someone managed to grab screens of the Facebook accounts. A very long-since colleague of mine weirdly went from games journalism into the police force, and when we reconnected on Facebook his feed was literally non stop open racism and anecdotes about how many minorities he’d busted and what animals they all were etc etc. I kept a few snaps just in case he ended up killing a teenager.

The idea that Trump has any personal feelings or understanding of NATO or trade alliances is fucking comical. He’s simply saying what he’s been told to say - and occasionally saying something because he personally believes it plays well to the base - or makes him look smart. But any complex issue - you’re simply not hearing Trump’s POV at all. You’re hearing Vlad’s.It’s ludicrous to hear even the decent pundits give him agency when describing half the shit he said.

The "public" in this case is Trump's base. The law doesn't care. The majority of voters know it's trash and the deplorables aren't capable of being more convinced than the 100% they are now (unless you use Gowdy's hyperbole division rules) so in effect this is a midterm push and a redundant political attempt to scupper the investigation. I do wish our European and Australasian friends would start dropping their own intelligence oppo but I understand why they can't interfere yet. This kind of thing has been bothering me for a while - trying to apply rational descriptions to the actions of trump and his people - as if Trump just genuinely likes Putin and is ignoring advice because he disagrees with it. He's ignoring advice because he is highly compromised - to such a degree that he paraphrases Putin rather than inject his own thoughts. He's terrified of whatever that kompromat is. It must be incredibly bad - but that could also just be colossally criminal tax returns rather than some pee soaked snuff tape. But whatever it is, it is deciding our policy towards Russia.

Thread: The Republican Party has not been taken over by racists and fascists
I think there’s an ever-shrinking cadre of people who maybe had an idealized vision of what being a republican meant - George Will, I think is a genuinely honest example of that, but it’s becoming ever-harder to find another example - Romney might have been it, but he kissed the ring, was humiliated and STILL continues to pretend that the Trump administration isn’t an incompetent Manchurian experiment simply to secure enough Trumpers to get him a Senate seat he literally feels entitled to. John McCain - flushed his legacy down the topilet by vacillating between fighting against Trumpism, but supporting most of it with his vote. Lindsay Graham almost flipped - but was very obviously offered something, blackmailed or paid off a few months ago. Not ONE republican is doing anything about Nunesm McConnell and the like. The only people saying anything (Flake for instance) have nothing to lose, and still aren’t standing up to this. Every day that goes by, Putin gets fantastically more than he ever dreamed - because he underestimated how wretched and vile the GOP has become - and how cheaply it can be bought. It’;s very obvious that fundraising and the NRA are both deeply compromised - and crimes (Nunes being an easy example) are happening IN PLAIN SIGHT. The Dems are still clinging to the false hope that the GOP can normalize - but all that does is fuel the both sides nonsense - the media as usual is pretending that things are OK - frankly the media is complicit in what is happening to our democracy, and that’s working in Putin’s favor too. Unless a lot of people actually end up in jail after this, then we are on a path that could easily turn into a spiral, very quickly.

A nice easy bit of math for those folks would be: We’re going to give you $77 - and we’re going to inflate the rest of your bills by two or three hundred bucks and oh yeah we’re going to offshore or automate your job next year.” Be great if people realized that they don’t have to be a republican permanently - if the GOP is being shitty, the only way to alter it is with your vote. If you want the old party back, vote against it once or twice. That’s how you can make your vote powerful. It’s not a football team where you support it through thick and thin. Your football team isn’t putting babies in jail.

Again, he’s responsible for hundreds of thousands of Iraqi deaths, the needless deaths of countless Americans, in pursuit of a failed neocon strategy and a hint of revenge against a country that had neither weapons of mass destruction nor one metric whit of anything to do with 9/11. And the entire action predictably made things worse, not better and established ISIS as a more readical threat than Al Qaeda. Nice? Fuck off. He should be in jail.

The wealthy intellectuals you’d hope would drive for moderation have instead embraced the reality that left to its own devices, the GOP was doomed to demographic failure, but they see that it can be extended, perhaps indefinitely, through nationalism, racism and extreme court-driven gerrymandering. But that’s a nonsense for the average voter. If only those who genuinely, meaningfully benefitted from republican tax policy voted, they’d lose in the greatest landslide and lop-sided vote in legit political history. The numbers would look like the North Korean election.

The title contains one term I object to - which is “we” - as if there’s some new plurality of rational dissent. What ultimately drives the “controversy” about Last Jedi is a temporary (I hope) abberation. First position: There is no controversy and it’s just a typical movie where a lot of people liked it and a reasonable number of folks disliked it because it just wasn’t their thing, or reasonable run of the mill movie complaints, or because they imagined it going in a different direction than it did. Big whoop, that’s art after all. Second position: A group of organized brigaders, defined by loneliness and malleability, working themselves into an misogynist and racist froth based on imagined sleights and agreed upon outrages that is then expressed not just in organized critical response, but actual organized doxxing and attacks on individuals.

Thread: Bicycle ERA |OT| This Is Why
I got in a crazy argument with someone at work about this. Middle aged guy in not great shape was looking to start mountain biking in the summer. He’d never done it before and was last on a ten speed steel road bike more than a decade ago. So I suggested some easy rolling trails and parks to learn the basics of cadence, braking and tabletopping, etc. And I suggested he look at a decent quality hardtail with front suspension, because: A) On an $800 Trek or similar hardtail, you could ride practically any trail just fine. Certainly every single beginner course. B) If he didn’t like it, the hardtail would make much more sense as a commuter/cruiser C) If he got into it - he could upgrade or start a collection. My other colleague went nuts though, and was exasperated that I wouldn’t recommend a full suspension Trek/Cannondale/Scott etc. And honestly I think there’s something to be said for learning what terrain does to suspended and rigid bike geometry through your body. There’s good muscle memory lessons to be learned from feeling those impacts and geologies.

Thread: Annihilation |OT| A Shimmer Out Of Space [Spoilers]
Thanks to Ghos for pointing me to the real thread! Oh my god. That was unexpected and astonishing. While it had a bunch of genuinely dread-filled scares, I can’t think of it as anything other than pure sci-fi, and one of the most genuinely alien “aliens” ever put on screen. In fact, I love the movie’s message that it might not actually be an organism at all - but a phenomenon - like weather or gravity. And I can’t tell you how giddy I was when the movie didn’t end at the lighthouse. What happens from that point on is INCREDIBL:E. Full disclosure: I had a flicker of disappointment when the eyes changed color (dumb horror trope) but even that was a powerful twist//inversion of the trope - because it reframed everything that happened with the reflective biped: She didn’t defeat the Shimmer at all. The Shimmer finished its evolution/conquest/matching/alien-as-hell process - like some sort of refracting chrysalis, and emerged as those two. It won. It used the flash grenade (and the remaining parts of her) to clean up its mess so it could move onto it’s next stage, whatever that is. I think on reflection, it shits on Interstellar and the Arrival in terms of its portrayal of something legitimately and truly alien. I think it’s a masterpiece and it’s easily in my top ten sci-fi of all time. I need to digest more and rewatch. I shoulda bought it and not rented it, but the three star average gave me pause. reading this thread kind of shines a light on why some people didn’t like/get it. I can see that. In that regard it’s kinda like A.I. This is head-canon, but I was speculating that some part of the process (the bruising seemed to come from nowhere, remember) was creating amnesia about something that happens as soon as you enter the Shimmer.

Yep - I LOVE that. When writing sci-fi, I am often forced to align with convention because it’s comprehensible - and bluntly games need bipedal analogs of the protagonist for symmetry - but I often tell people that the Star Trek school of bipedal human analogs doesn’t even make sense on Earth, where the spider just over there in the corner is fantastically different to a person. Creating an antagonist with no relatable moral compass or motivation is something that’s typically reserved for natural disasters like Twister or Deep Impact - which of course you could argue is precisely what Annihilation is.

This is literally the most dangerous advice I've ever seen on the subject. Go see a specialist and get soft tissue examined with MRS before doing anything that requires weights. There are multiple causes of back pain and your specific injury or fault will require specific physical therapy. Sure it's possible deadlifts might help you but they might also exacerbate the issue depending what and where the pain is. And pain can express itself in places outside of the injury. For example my L4 L5 Saturday and stenosis can cause pain on my right or left hip creeping down either thigh. Get imaging and specialist opinion.

Inspector reports MUST be viewed through the lens of the local property market. If you're buying an old house in Waco, Texas, and the inspector comes back with everything from black mold to Indian burial ground, walk away. If you get a similar report in San Francisco, or Seattle, for example, you may have to accept that you're buying a toxic deathtrap with a murderer living in the attic. Our last inspector was the brother of our long term realtor, who is also a close family friend (otherwise that would be a fantastically bad conflict of interest, btw), so we got a pretty brutal list, but it was 100% accurate.

I am incredibly lucky I bought when I did. Got a bargain in Wallingford 15 years ago and moved into an even bigger bargain when the market tanked. Pure coincidence. Now I have something like 90% clear equity and will be mortgage free in a few years. Zero insight or skill involved and I paid it forward by telling my best friend about a ridiculous bargain across the street. But the housing crisis pales beside the cougar crisis - I've cycled there before. It's tragic and the guy who ran is probably a million times braver than me but if both guys had stayed and yelled and thrown things they probably would have spooked it - cougar advice is different from bear - they tell you to fight back and not play dead. And never run unless you have an exit like a vehicle. So awful.

I don't know who owned it or lived there, but I met a super nice dude who was working on it for a whole summer and he really turned it around. Also the only african-american neighbor I "know." It's going to be loud though. White noise from the freeway is something people get used to. Depending on the wind direction, we can sometimes hear it from our front yard. Edit: How do I activate Dark Mode and is there a mobile mode?

West Seattle is rad, still relatively bargain compared to "normal" Seattle, and the traffic CAN be horror show getting across the bridge, but I wouldn't move there unless I had a view. But it also has some of the best views, restaurants and beaches. Yeah, we realized a couple of years ago that even if we got like, suddenly rich, we're already right in the neighborhood we want to be, and don't need more space. part of me wants a usable garage, but I would settle for a hot tub in the corner of the yard.

Moon and Durkan have equally terrible ideas about how to deal with homelessness that do more to generate new homeless visitors than they do to deal with the specific sets of radically different problems that create and in some cases, encourage homelessness. They need to deal with those issues, not the blanket term. We need better mental healthcare. We need better addiction treatment. We do need more affordable housing, but that's a pipe dream for 99.999% of the homeless regardless of how "affordable" a two bedroom condo in Ballard is. We need to acknowledge that most of our homeless are not the poster-child of a single mom with two kids struggling to get by. They're folks with real institutional issues and that homelessness is an effect, not a cause. Job One: Get the police to crack down on the heroin dealers that run these encampments. remember the crack epidemic in the 80s? Where we threw thousands of addicts into the criminal justice mill and created more harm than good? We did that because they were black and we are a fundamentally racist society. Heroin and opiate abuse is an issue that predominantly affects white people, and so it's a "health crisis," and in America we deal with that by bankrupting people and tossing them into the streets. Housing access and affordability ARE a crisis, but we need to split that off from the other root causes and drivers. We need to deal with it surgically. /rant

I grew up with Forth, Fortran, cOBOL and BASIC. I will say that a deep understanding of BASIC isn’t as useless as I assumed it would be since it’s very easy to understand basic logic flows and debugging principles. I used to edit and create BASIC games and Apps for a computer magazine in the early nineties that came with a covermounted tape as well as pages of (Amstrad) BASIC users could type in if they had the patience. Simple typos could cause the entire program to fail and we’d run checksums against the finished code time and time again , but were at the mercy of Ventura and Quark text box overflow . Also I lived alongside dinosaurs.

Thread: Audio Era: Because Sound Matters
If you are getting a soundbar for fidelity there's a lot of decent options -- but if you want one for positional information in games - and Atmos effects - Yamaha is the only brand I've had experience with that actually works in terms of placing the audio in the right locations - but their Atmos bars are really expensive. They work great but it's not a cost saver and it's really only rational for folks who want simplicity or can't place real speakers. But the YSP models really do work - I use one in my gaming setup and positional audio is perfect -footsteps intended to be above and behind you - sound like they're above and behind you. Looks like Yamaha owns a lot of patents on reflective audio. But real speakers make more sense if your setup permits.

They are expensive as shit to license - and some of that is because they only expect to sell it once or twice. So it basically needs to more than pay for itself - which again is why they amortize over so many ideas per shoot. The advent of cheap, good, augmented consumer photography is going to threaten that market though, just as youtube does TV/studio monopolies.

My mother-in-law has me car shopping for her, which is fun, but I could use some ideas. In my opinion Grandpa should stop driving soon, but his eyesight is decent and he’s not senile, just losing some of his instincts. He drives slow as shit too and rarely takes the highway, so he just needs to drive granny to the doctors and the odd errand. She doesn’t care about brands, but she’s severely arthritic and needs a car with easy passenger seat access, which for her is higher than a sedan and lower than an SUV. Currently she has a 2017 Forester and finds it a bit too high for her to get in. Five or six inches lower would be perfect. Guess what measurement is never included in car specs? I’m going to have to go to dealers and measure. But this is what she needs in the vehicle. Budget - anywhere from 20-40k I guess. 1. Automated safety features - pedestrian/obstacle detection, lane assist, lane departure warning, comprehensive camera/radar for parking. Potentially automatic parking, although they’d be too scared to use it. 2. A hatchback or liftgate to put her wheelchair in easily. 3. AWD What’s weird is that Acura’s wagon would have been perfect, but bizarrely doesn’t have AWD. She also wanted a car without leather, but I explained that with all the comfort and electronics features she wants, that’s actually hard to avoid. Nobody is selling loaded vehicles without leather. Honda stopped making that blobby crossover, which would have been perfect if it had up to date drive assist features. So anything I’m just spacing on?

She isn’t really up for - or well enough for going around trying them which is obviously unhelpful, but I have driven a couple to her for her to try. But we already figured out that just knowing the sill heights is a pretty good indicator. I keep forgetting models that would fit the bill - yesterday remembered the Volvo V60 has all her requirements - waiting to hear back from their tape measuring salesman! Looked into getting the Forester lowered too, but I think she’s formed an irrational hatred of the car, and gave it to her daughter (who is psyched to get a free car out of nowhere).

Technically, artistically and in terms of design- that game created some seriously difficult acts to follow and to be honest in terms of 3D platform games, has arguably only been topped by other Mario sequels. The excitement in the MST3K weeaboos is as palpable as Klobb’s mustache game. Klobb’s mustache game also set untoppable industry standards that only Ron Jeremy came close to beating.

Thinking of picking up a Cannondale Carbon 2 Quick tomorrow. I’m going to add a stem riser to bring the handle bars up a few inches, because of a back problem and personal geometry preferences, a comfier Serfas gel seat with nut buckets, and an under seat bag for phone and one tube. One bottle cage. And that’s it. The bike is 20 pounds even, so it’ll be the lightest I’ve ever ridden, but not enough for me to notice except when lifting onto the bike rack.

So the good news is that I transferred almost all the equipment I want from my old bike, to my new bike. The bad news got doubled though: I tried to take the stem riser from my Gary Fisher, but it looks like they stripped the post tube bolt when they installed it, because it just won’t come out.Spins like it has been loosened, then seizes up again at the end (and yes, I am spinning anti clockwise). So I gave up on that for the moment. Then I remembered I had a stem riser on my mountain bike - so I removed that and the spacers (oh yes, I need about four more spacers for some reason, even though I haven’t lost any. Now here’s the nightmare: When I removed the riser and handlebars, the fork and stem bearings/washer thingy came out of the stem at both ends. And I have no idea how to reseat the whole mechanism. Nothing I did manually made any difference, and when I looked it up online, the guy had three really specialist tools to do the whole assembly (which looked really simple with the tools). So I started with three working bikes, and now I have one. Just wondering if the simplest thing is to take them to the dealer and pay to have them re-sat.

Those metal railings aren’t a closed loop, so they rotate the bike to get it off the railings lock and all. Think about those toys where you try to guide a hoop over a twisted metal rail without touching the live rail and setting off a buzzer. Well, sometimes they aren’t closed loops - which is how you got the loop on in the first place. EDIT: Just watched higher res video - that loop IS closed. So I have no idea.

Thanks! Here’s a pic of the upper section - where you can see the bearing ring is just not seated in there correctly. Whatever’s below it (cup?) is still there - it’s just that ring of bearings. The problem is identical on the bottom end below - the bearing ring just loosely falls out when you take the weight off it. Nothing is missing - it’s a closed loop, as it were. And when trying to rescrew the post bolt doesn’t seem to pull the two ends together, as I expected it to.

Thanks for this. I at least now know what to go look for. Nothing is missing or damaged - if this makes sense - I never fully removed anything that could allow the bearing rings or any other components to fall off - basically there’s always been something on top of it - and I do get the distinct feeling that if it were just all seated and firm vertically, the final bolt would secure everything down through the vertical. It’s really difficult with one set of hands tho!

I’m similarly white and educated and damn lucky - a fact that was never more obvious than when I first lived here on a H1 visa, there was a typo on my computerized records that meant younger less experienced customs agents weren’t familiar with the flag or how to clear it, so sometimes I’d be sent to the crying room for secondary screening. The rooms were invariably filled with crying older women of Latin and East Asian origin- often waiting for a relative to come save them. The agents would take one look at me and stick my passport at the front of the queue because they assumed my paperwork was going to be quicker and easier to resolve. But even on the fifteenth or sixteenth occasion, I’d be terrified and helpless feeling - I can only imagine what those (usually) women were going through. This was back in the day too, when things were less intense. Immigration to the USA is difficult and stressful and expensive. And even then,I never resented illegal immigrants because anyone with eyes can see that they’re an essential part of our service and agricultural industries. I couldn’t walk a mile in their shoes. You want a ten dollar avocado or a thousand dollar motel room, then keep building that wall.

Started in Scotland, on the frozen nasty east coast (in the 70s, when it was snowpocalypse, which should but doesn’t care Tories/Trumpets). Swimming in the North Sea when you’re an ignorant kid is some bullshit. Moved to England, the southwest, where long, languid summers and 80 degree SCORCHIO Sun headlines were normal. Moved to London. Everything was polluted and hot. Moved to LA - where I was the ONLY person walking between LaBrea and LaCiengega. Except the cast of Miracle Mile (you should watch) Moved to San Francisco, which can vacillate between 100 degreees arid and 50 degree fog, within a single linear mile. Seattle: Perfect summer, depressing winter. Nothing else. Just those two. Ideal? Tulum Mexico: Super hot and humid, but coool swimming opportunities everywhere, and refreshing drinks galore. Also safer than everywhere in Australia. I get severe sunburn in 30 minutes. But if I have spray on sunscreen, put me in the Sunshine starship Solarium. I get why it’s hypnotic.

This piece of shit has probably already caused violence and death and his marks are just suckers he wants to scam out of money. He’s a dangerous fraudster and he should not be in civil society. Almost certain nobody on this forum believes or supports him and if they do they’re probably too embarrassed to admit it.

Nothing Nothing wrong with not grabbing an objective if you’re better serving your team by doing things you’re good at. I give a lot of thought to random team behaviors and lots of things are excusable that wouldn’t be if you went in with friends. I tend to grab the ball and flag because I’m better at dodging and jumping and frustrating players than I am at shooting or ad how strategizing. It’s probably a frustrating look to strangers, but I tend to do well so it might be a wash. I will say that the single worst possible behavior, in some ways worse than betraying, is berating strangers for not being good enough. I probably encounter that jerk every five or six games. “None of you idiots have mics, leave the sniper alone that’s mine, why didn’t you protect me, wah wah wah “ It INVARIABLY makes the team play WORSE, and nobody wants to help that guy. I’ve even sent polite messages after the game noting the negative effects if that kind of commentary. You can probably guess how most folks react. Funniest thing about it is that guy tends to never finish in first place on his team anyway.

Not a Designer, so the following is my observation/opinion as a player - with regard to ADS - I consider "true" ADS to be a form of lock on/snap aim rather than zoom/visual accuracy assist. But to the " the counterargument is that if you did remove it, it would feel like a convenient "standard" for shooter controls had been removed. I'm not demanding like it, but you can't look at a null response and gather from that that they actually . Often silence is a form of assent, and obviously we do deeper research than just observing the dead numbers. But again I personally don't ever think of Halo's zoom effect as ADS. Other weapon changes are vastly more meaningful to the gameplay. I probably play too much Super Fiesta tho.

I genuinely believe there's more money to be made at a dollar or two for Neo Geo stuff than $7. Much as 1992 me would be baffled by this situation - I think they're too expensive to be casual and too cheap to be premium. For me it's whatever the opposite of a sweet spot is. They have way more data than I do though.
