Pro controller helps immensely! Totally worth the investment. I was kind of in the same boat as you, where certain parts of the game were just too daunting. The nice part about this game is that every single progression-blocking boss can be facetanked or cheesed with the right builds. Soul Master is probably the last “difficult” required boss you have to defeat through actual skill, although certain charms and tactics can make it much easier.

Yes and no. HOTS is probably a wash as far as a profit-making venture goes, especially compared to the Hearthstone/Overwatch cash cows. I'm saying this based on how large their development team is, compared to my (limited) understanding of their metrics. The development overhead required to sustain a content pipeline like theirs is huge, and while I'm sure it's still pulling in respectable revenue, it's unquestionable that their resources would be better spent elsewhere. I personally think any other company would've pulled the plug years ago. In HOTS's case, the loot box formula wasn't about making money, but about utilizing the gambling formula to improve retention and excitement. Also, I don't have access to their metrics, and Blizzard isn't sharing them publicly, but I do have a few friends who are/were on the HOTS team and it's been pretty grim there. EDIT: Made a few edits for clarity.

Sorry, it's really all I can say. I don't doubt that Blizzard could've put out something amazing, but the cards seemed stacked against the HOTS team from the beginning. I'll just say that it's very much an old boys' club and politics rules everything. Yep. Just want to caveat this by saying I'm not a Blizzard employee, just a guy who worked on some MOBAs previously and hears things from friends currently/formerly at Blizzard working on HOTS. I also want to say that I didn't mean to just come in here and crap on the game, I ended up playing it for a year and genuinely enjoyed it, but I'm not optimistic on the talents of their design team.

Yep, I remember LeagueGAF :) Fun times. But yes, that's a pretty good analysis of the skill breakdown in HOTS. MOBA fundamentals will take you very far, and the rest of it is basically mechanical optimization. I think this makes for a much lower skill ceiling, because the game is missing a lot of the macro decisionmaking you'd find in LOL or Dota. For example, positioning is still important, but trivialized by mounts and smaller maps. Sorry, I don't want to dwell too much on the financial aspect because (1) I can't bring up any data to show you, and (2) everything I'm saying is surmised from their development trajectory and hearsay from Blizz employees that I know. However, I do think we should consider how Blizzard would handle a failure. Would they close up shop, or try to turn it around? My expectation from a branding perspective is that they're more likely to attempt a repair than to call it quits, and that's what I think is happening. The same thing is happening with Starcraft 2, where they're taking a flagging game and basically trying to reinvent it. You have to understand that from a business perspective, you don't just dramatically change your business model (SC2 going F2P, HOTS going to loot boxes) if everything is swell. The potential for disaster is huge, which is why I think they were already prepared for disaster, and hoping for a turnaround. I can't remember if I was told this particular piece of information during a job interview (which would be NDA'd) or during a conversation with a friend (which wouldn't). So, staying on the safe side :)

Overall design, with gameplay systems being the biggest culprit, and UX being their biggest strength. So, things like mounts, talents, objectives, leveling, comeback mechanisms, etc. Everything is basically funneled towards a goal of compressing and flattening the experience. Case-in-point: what's the biggest difference between gameplay at level 10 vs level 20? The death timer is dramatically longer. To increase the stakes, they depend on removing you from the experience. While death timer is a big deal for other games, it scales much harder in HOTS because things like territory control, map positioning, and vision are trivialized.

Ironically, the League engine is the oldest of all major MOBAs, and Riot has spent the past several years trying to improve it piece-by-piece. I wouldn't consider the engine to be HOTS' biggest impediment though. I'd say it's their design team and their lack of understanding for what makes MOBAs interesting, leading to some of the highest churn in the genre.

Thread: Heroes of the Storm |OT| Ded Gaem Outlives Forum
Churn refers to players quitting the game, and it's a metric that developers look at to determine player retention. By design, HOTS is a flatter experience than other MOBAs, meaning there's lower highs and higher lows. The overall skill ceiling is also considerably lower. This leads to HotS players hitting their personal skill ceiling much faster than in other MOBAs, as there aren't enough auxiliary systems in place for them to grow. This is why HOTS 2.0 was focused entirely on retention mechanisms--it was a desperate attempt to improve their retention and reduce churn. It did not work as well as they'd hoped, because their designers don't understand that retention mechanisms don't make up for a low skill ceiling.

League of Legends doesn't have voice chat or clans, has less onboarding, less retention features, and a more aggressive monetization, yet it has much less churn and much higher retention. HOTS' in-match UI is quite good and actually removes the necessity of voice chat. When HOTS was released, I considered it to have the best-in-class UI, and I actually used it as inspiration while working on UX for LOL. And no, I'm not equating grinding with low skill ceiling. Being skillful in HOTS is a very different, less involved affair compared to other MOBAs. It focuses primarily on mechanical execution, much less on macro-decision making.

This is why people with public-facing jobs maintain professional accounts separately from their private F&F accounts that they do stupid shit on. Saying and doing stupid shit while still representing matters of the company (e.g. talking about your job) on your public account absolutely should result in consequences. Absurd that this is being twisted into some GamerGate anti-women nonsense. They may have played a part, but don't give them the credit. It's standard business to severely employees who disparage the company's image either directly or indirectly. The "straw that broke the camel's back" in these situations usually is the trigger that gets the employee fired; there's usually some amount of stuff going on in the background the public doesn't know about. I know of one prominent Blizzard employee who was let go because of a snarky forum post he made. I myself was reprimanded and asked to give a public apology when I called a teammate "worthless" in a match of LOL. Plenty of other examples I've encountered.

Warframe is a fully-realized F2P GaaS, which means their development is highly dependent on running a good live operation. They're respondent to data and player needs because their business model is dependent on it. Destiny, on the other hand, is still a traditional boxed product. I'd imagine that the most important metric for them is units sold, and they're kicking ass there. It's not until they get DLC attach rates to compare to D1 that they'll start thinking hard--or at least, that was likely the plan before the media blowup. Chalk it up to a difference in developmental methodology.

If the goal is to make players switch weapons, then the design needs to justify that. In D2, if you have two equally strong primaries, then the energy weapon is always going to be more useful. In PVE, it takes down shields. In PVP, it deals bonus to supers. There's no justification to switch in the middle of a PVE battle against a shielded enemy because you can generally kill the enemy faster than you can switch your weapon. This leaves the only real reason to switch in PVE to be "I ran out of ammo". In PVP, it's just "I need to cover a different distance".

This is only for PVE, and it doesn't make an appreciable difference outside of DPSing bosses. The game is balanced in such a way that it's always going to take X hits from low ROF weapons to kill something. Meanwhile, in PVP, energy weapons are strictly superior as they deal 10% additional damage to roaming supers. Yet another important aspect of balance that Bungie NEVER communicates anywhere in the game, and doesn't even make sense, considering Guardians also have shields. It's really pathetic that basic mechanics like these have to either be datamined or discovered through extensive testing. It's more balanced in that it makes every player well-rounded. This means that players cannot specialize into roles, however, and removes their weaknesses. Every player is equipped at every range now, which leads to homogeny.

I'm not making excuses for the community being "toxic". Bungie has always had the opportunity to engage with the constructive members of the community. That side of the community has always been open. I've seen good and bad community management, and this definitely falls on the bad side. There's a lack of transparency, trust, and good faith engagement on both sides, but it's up to the developer to "be the bigger person", because it's up to them to maintain their playerbase, not the other way around. The community should never be held to a standard; it's up to the developers to shape their own community. That's always been the case. Anyway, I don't want to flood this thread with too much negativity or derail it any further. I can PM you some firsthand examples of how developers I've worked for have handled similar situations if you're interested. Personally, I'm still enjoying the game a lot and playing every day, but nearly all of my friends quit just 3 or 4 weeks after starting.

I've been on both ends of the stick, and getting chewed out by players does suck. But from a PR and community side, there are easy ways to address that--the least of which would be to acknowledge that players are being heard, or that changes are coming. Bungie could've chosen to control the narrative, but they opted for silence instead, and let the community assume the worst and fester. As a result, sentiment has been in a long decline. Players have been posting their grievances for months to no acknowledgement. Hotfixes and patches go by that don't address even the most basic issues. So now we're at where we're at, and it's definitely not the community's fault.

Wanted to speak to some of these points individually, because they don't line up to my experience in the industry. From a branding perspective, they are absolutely a singular entity. I'd argue that of AAA developers, there might not be any company more singular than Bungie. They don't try to publicize rockstars, their player-facing communications are diegetic, and it seems only a few employees are authorized to speak to the public, and only after marketing has filtered the messaging. I can't blame a particular designer even if I wanted to, because they have no visibility. Kind of referred to this before, but I doubt most of them are allowed to speak to the public. Obviously this should never be done. But the majority of criticisms I'm seeing on places like Reddit are legitimate. And we're only at this stage because of the lack of communication for months.

Uriel's is technically a Nessus drop. I ended up getting my first and only from Crucible. It can also drop from Gunsmith and random Engrams. You can see what drops from what here:

Yep, the PvP is bad. Cooldowns are too long and TTK is too high, leading to a teamshooting meta. PVP is best when you've got a group of 4 and are communicating/tryharding. In every other situation, it kind of sucks.

Group fights are fun. 1v1's are a ton of fun. But when you're trying to play smart and pull a flank on a 1v2, and you can't kill the first person before the second person runs in front of him and takes you down, you'll start to see the frustration. The TTK needs to be lowered about 20-25% to hit perfection IMO. Playing on PC as well, btw.

It's an awful policy. The "secrecy" around Heroic triggers is probably the apex of mechanical obfuscation I've seen come out of a AAA developer. Anyone who cares will Google it, anyone who doesn't care enough won't, and risks screwing up the event for all the other players. It's just bad, bad design.

The other day, I went to the Well of Flame on Nessus just for kicks. It's an absolutely beautiful area that the campaign doesn't take you to, but there were no other players there. And why would they go? It's barren. Just look at Ubisoft's open world sandboxes--you enter a new area and your minimap is unshrouded, new activities pop up, you get XP, a new fast travel point opens, etc. What do you get in Destiny? Absolutely nothing. The goal of a progression system isn't just to increase the lifespan of a game, but to incentivize players into doing what the developers believe will be beneficial to their experience.

Again, you're getting the completely wrong takeaway. I wasn't saying to drown the player with activities. I was saying to use the progression system to incentivize behaviors like exploring. For example, there's a lot of scannable objects in Destiny 2. Having a centralized list to track which objects you've scanned would be an example of this. Destiny 2 has nothing of the sort.

Is anyone maining Hunter for PC PVP? I'm finding it difficult to justify Hunter over Titan/Warlock. Seems like a lot of the power in evade is bundled into throwing off autoaim, which has no effect on PC. Meanwhile, Titan/Warlock base stats and gear selection is much better as well, and both have access to instant damage AOE supers for clutch plays.

Thanks for the clarification . As far as I can tell, damage output and total health is based entirely on your current Power level. Going above the recommended does nothing, but going below it gives you a scaling debuff to both stats based on how far below you are. Really lends itself to a flat experience.

Alcohol evaporates when you cook it, so it's everything left over that lends the taste. Hence why restaurants can serve kids food made with wine reductions. Since baijiu is such high alcohol content and filtered, there's probably not much left over to lend flavor. Also, it's expensive and already tastes like shit anyway!

I'd stay away from store-bought preworkouts supps. There's a lot of junk in "proprietary mixes" when the main active ingredient is caffeine, and a lot of supplement companies put illegal/unlabeled substances in their mixes. The FDA actually has a list here (), and you can see, there's a lot of stuff that shouldn't be abused hiding in your supps. You can get better results running your own ECA (Ephedrine-Caffine-Aspirin) stack at a much lower price, with no surprises. That said, if your body is able to handle it, and you're lifting for aesthetics, there's not much downside to having some caffeine prior to a workout, since the base metabolic rate increase helps with burning fat.

Ubi's depiction of Montana is gorgeous for sure. I'm finding that I don't have any "WOW" moments, outside of the game just being a technical and artistic marvel in general. Coming out of AC: Origins' vast desert landscapes, I feel a bit underwhelmed. The map actually feels small to me, although I wonder if I'm just spoiled by how huge Origins and GR: Wildlands are. But then again, after cruising around 2/3rds of the map, I can't help but feel everything feels a bit samey.

Money is quite easy to come by if you get the perks that double your hunting rewards and increase backpack size, and just go hunting for a while. The bigger problem is that there's nothing worthwhile to buy after you max out your starter weapons, because they're already the best weapons you can get. After finishing the southern area, I'm hard-pressed to continue playing. The story isn't particularly interesting, and I don't enjoy the locale as much as FC4's Kyrat. The skill and weapon progression is nonexistent, and I don't feel any more powerful than I did when I started the game. Combat is a pushover if you go the stealthy route, and even more of a pushover if you just use Boomer and Jess. The fishing was kind of neat for a bit, until I got the mission rod and suddenly it's a pushover too. I'm looking at the other mission rewards and asking myself why I would care to earn a certain vehicle when they're all the same, and I can just wingsuit or helicopter my way to wherever I want to go. When I started playing it blew my mind how anyone could give this game a 65/100 but now I'm wondering if that was too high. I stopped playing AC: Origins when this game launched, but I'm really excited to just jump back into Egypt.
