So much discussion, debate, and praise for this game. I'm eager to play it. Waiting on a physical release for Switch. Then I just have to find the time...

Thread: “Dating While Black”
Yeah, that sucks. I also suspect the dating sites play into the numbers/statistics in an effort to provide the best user experience... The last time I was single I did the online dating thing and I noticed that once I checked out a few black females' profiles and even liked and/or messaged them THEN the site(s) started showing me lots of black women in my feed/suggestions who I had never seen before (and I was online a lot). It was actually pretty blatant.

Thread: I just Watched The Last Jedi, why was it controversial??
My biggest issue with the movie is the way it discards so much of what was set up in Episode VII. I'm assuming the throne room battle in TLJ is roughly half-way through the movie, so at halfway through the trilogy Snoke is discarded and the whole mystery surrounding Rey is just a big "it's nothing" burger. Flynn is wasted, Luke is dead... Where are the remaining characters going? All that's really left is the showdown between Rey and Kylo for Episode IX and the path the story took to get there was kind of... for nothing? And contradictory. Going forward I hope they outline a story arc for future trilogies as the approach they took with this one was not successful. I don't think there's anything that Episode IX can do to "'fix" it. The other small stuff (humor, Leia space force powers, etc..) I can overlook even if I'm not 100% sold on them. Oh, but Canto Bight was awful. Easily the worst part of the movie for me.

I wish there was some type of tutorial for this game. Even just a quick, 2 minute, here are the basics of building type of thing. Although, with as large as the maps are I suppose you can just go into games and spend a significant amount of time teaching yourself. Still... I find this game somewhat intriguing... I just don't have the time to get deeply into it unfortunately.

I just checked this out. I've never played any other version, but nothing about the game gave me the impression it's a terrible port. Looked decent (undocked) and ran fine (fairly steady 30fps). Netcode seemed solid as well. Seems like a fun game, but not sure I have the time to dive into it properly.

Thread: [New York Times]: In Denmark, Harsh New Laws for Immigrant ‘Ghettos’
This story is completely anecdotal, but it's a bit relevant and I also find it funny. My girlfriend was born in Denmark, but moved to the U.S. when she was one year old. We were in Denmark last fall visiting her family and during our trip we spent an evening with a married couple who are friends of my girlfriend. Over dinner politics and Trump came up and the two Dane's had a great time laughing about Trump and his wall along the Mexico border. This is all fine. What blew my mind was that they then immediately transitioned the conversation into complaining about all of the middle-eastern/Muslim immigrants and what a problem it is and how it must be solved etc... The irony was astounding. They sounded *exactly* like Trump supporters who want the wall built! I just laughed to myself on the inside and didn't comment. I don't particularly enjoy discussing politics in public and certainly not over dinner with people I just met two hours prior.

Yeah, it could be a lot of fun--especially for multiplayer. Imagine a sort of Mario Kart power-up system (random) with all kinds of variations on the grappling hook ability. Of course, you could also make rewarding the power-ups skill or event based (as opposed to random) as well. Either way, maybe something to think about :) Ha! ;p

This looks pretty cool! Is there any skill involved in using the grappling hook that grabs the chests? And what about power-ups/abilities for the grappling hook? Something along the lines of an auto-target hook that automatically grabs the lowest chest out of the air without the need to be in the chest's "lane?" Things like that could add some additional depth/fun to the game. Especially the multiplayer. Not criticizing the game in any way. I just immediately had these thoughts while watching the game play video :)

Well, like I said, very generally speaking... lol This looks fantastic! And yes, making the environments feel alive and lived in goes a long way! These look great! I think the 60 pixel height sprite would work perfectly fine for a modern game, although if you were using a 640x360 native canvas you would have a large viewport--meaning a lot of the environment around the player would be visible. We ended up going with a 480x270 pixel canvas for Bushiden as we felt too much of the surrounding environment was visible/exposed using 640x360 with our sprite sizes and tile sizes. The only drawback there to me is that we can't scale evenly to 720p. Anyway, it all becomes a balancing act and you are smart to be thinking about this now and doing tests.

Thanks! We just aren't currently supporting 720p. The only thing that bothers about that is a potential Switch port, but there's plenty of development time left to find a solution. The PC version offers a variety of resolutions (all even scales of the native res) and then we offer a "full screen" option which will scale the game to whatever resolution your monitor is. Only a monster would use that option if their monitor resolution isn't an even scale of the game resolution though lol. 960x540 on a 720p screen is acceptable in my opinion. And who knows, maybe we end up using a 640x360 native res. It would only take me 20 minutes or so to implement that.

Yeah, I've coded a lot in my life (professionally as a career and also hobbyist stuff) and my goal is always to do things in a way that are clean and don't have the "bandaids," but sometimes you realize it's impossible to do something completely clean and elegant and those "bandaids" are needed. Also, very generally speaking, there's now *WRONG* way to do something. It's just possible there's a better way lol.

Thanks, guys, but that's not really what I'm getting at. I don't have any issues implementing the lerp function for camera movement. But when your camera is following your player as the player moves you are essentially changing the start and target positions of the lerp every frame. Which... is sort of incorrect usage for the lerp method. This is also why the lerp produces the laggy camera (assuming the time/percentage value is not too high). I think this explains what I'm getting at nicely: So... just wondering if anyone has taken this into account or if everyone just changes start and target value every frame and adjusts time/percentage value.

Thread: Indie Game Development |OT 2018| Come, help, learn, show and tell!
Question for those of you who have implemented a camera and used a lerp or smoothstep function for moving it in a 2D game... How did you handle the fact that the target is (or can be) constantly moving? I suspect most people haven't accounted for that and are happy with the results. However, that's technically not how a lerp function should work as the start position and target position should not change until the lerp is finished. Yet, that is not ideal for a situation where a character is moving and the camera is following using a lerp method. Have you guys just fed the lerp method an updated start position and target position every frame (as the player is moving) or have you implemented something more complex?

How is Instagram for promotion? We are still working at building awareness of our game and I think we have most of the bases covered, but we don't have an Instagram account. Is that a worthwhile time investment? Also, does anyone have any suggestions for gaining exposure on Reddit? I don't use it much, it doesn't make as much sense to me compared to a traditional forum like this, and most of the gaming-related subreddits I've found make it pretty hard to share/gain exposure for your game. On the development front progress is going extremely well right now and we are super excited with how everything is coming together. We will be showing off a LOT of the game once the holidays are over. Very excited! :)
