Thread: Why is Gamergate support still so prevalent in gaming communities?
Why Gamergate happened, as well as the dramatic and traumatic impact it had, has already been explained in detail here. The only thing I would think to add is that Gamergate became so influential and paved the way for the political alt-right because people continually failed to take it seriously. In the early days of Gamergate, many outlets and communities were reluctant to acknowledge the controversy. It was a conversation Gamergaters started, so it was a dialog they controlled, and the disinformation they spread from the outset proliferated a false narrative that nobody was taking an interest to counter. No one, of course, except for the people they were harassing and targeting. Because they were people who struggled to find community or voices within the industry - namely women and minorities - many were resigned to the abuse and faced an uphill battle to even be acknowledged. Meanwhile, the industry and platform owners pretended it was a fringe movement that didn't matter for as long as possible. This allowed them to organize, recruit, and develop a platform. By the time people couldn't ignore them any longer, considerable damage had already been done. Thankfully for gaming, the Gamergate movement was renounced and condemned and ultimately diminished. But none of the people involved ever went away, nor did their ideas, and we should never act like they're gone. They're not. Those who were familiar with Gamergate watched in horror as the same thing happened with the newly-branded alt-right. There are lessons to be learned here.

People who come to a near stop, if only for a moment, before taking a turn. I know that they are driving safe and it's completely illogical of me but I can't stand it. Nobody is expecting a turning vehicle to stop before turning, or to turn extremely slowly, and it makes everyone behind you floor the brakes. Just turn. Just take the turn. It costs me about 2 extra seconds of my life at any given time and yet it puts me through the roof.

Even though these threads are frequent and repetitive, I often read them all start to finish, because Dark Souls 2 is so enigmatic and I can't get enough of the divisive perspective. I just platinumed Dark Souls last night and have been trying to decide for years if I wanted to play Dark Souls 2 next. Now that it's finally here, and I have to make a decision, I still don't know. Whether Dark Souls 2 is worth the time investment, and whether Scholar of the First Sin is the correct version of the game to play, are questions I've never had answered in all my years in searching. I will have to go for it and try for myself. Perhaps that was the answer all along.

The final battle of the pacifist route of Undertale. I can’t think of any other time I’ve felt equal parts emotional and powerful when playing a video game. That battle is the embodiment of fictionalized heroism for me. Great music. Great dialog. Hectic and unique combat interactions. And depending on how invested in the game and its characters you’ve gotten, it’s incredibly moving. Because of how the game is presented, so much of what’s happening is left to your imagination, but it gives you more than enough to work with. Really thrilling.

It took me a really long time. I don’t think anything could have or would have accelerated it. I spent a lot of time rediscovering the things I liked that I wanted to represent “me.” I refined my hobbies, tried new things, and always said yes when other people asked to go somewhere or hang out. Eventually I relearned how to exist. It took me eight months before I was okay enough to start seeing other people. That character that requires an armed merchant is actually in Hofa. It’s really just an extremely difficult way to get to the volcanic island involving a whirlpool maze. As for the magic stuff, Marukoban already went over it a bit above. Once you’ve unlocked some fusion spells, they become doubly effective at raising the magic levels they’re made up of, so use them to train more. You want to unlock: -Revive (highest level Fire) -Hasten Time (highest level Water) -Galactic Rift (highest level Cosmology; hits all enemies) -Stone Shower (second-highest level Earth) Also make sure you build the College when prompted (different from the Magical Research Center) and complete the test to unlock the Tactician. This will give you access to more fusion spells. -Elixir (max heal and cure status; Water/Earth) -Crimson Flare (best single-hit spell, Fire/Cosmo) -Diamond Dust (powerful low-mp multi-target move; Water/Light) Those are the essential ones, as far as I’m concerned. Initiate research on these ASAP because it takes a generation jump for research to complete. Therefore it cannot be done with a final emperor.

First things first! Here is a guide from 2005 that was never fully finished. But it remains probably the most comprehensive guide on the game (in English) and is a valuable tool. Keep in mind it uses some fan-translated names but it should still be clear. I don’t recommend “following the guide” so much as I suggest reading about the quest you’re going to do next so you know what’s possinble to screw up. People try to downplay how much can go wrong by telling you that it’s hard to see/do everything in a single run, but obviously you still want to do as much as you can. General Tips: 1. Grind magic immediately upon receipt. Cast a spell every turn if you can. Magic becomes an essential tool in the late-game and having weak magic will make the game almost impossible to play. 2. Don’t worry much about money. Visit your orchard periodically (once you build it) and trigger the improvements there and you’ll start generating massive amounts of money. Put these towards Blacksmith development and new spells at the Magical Research Center (when you unlock that option). 3. Battle count is an influential factor. Whether you win, lose, or flee from a battle increases your battle count. This yields you income based on whatever your income is from the treasury (for example, if you have an income of 1,000G, you’ll get that much every battle you have). It also adds one year (maximum of 250 years) to however much time passes at a generation jump. Most importantly, it levels up your enemies. So if you run from a hundred enemies without fighting them, you won’t level up your party at all, but the game will level up your enemies anyway. It’s fine to run from fights but don’t make a habit of it early on. 3. You can only carry 10,000G at a time, but all extra money goes straight to the treasury. Large expenses are spent right out of the treasury so it doesn’t matter, but your wallet is used for shopping outside the empire. 4. Unlock the Rapid Stream formation as soon as you can. This can be done after allying with the Armed Merchants in the first pirate quest. It’s worth it just to pick and kill emperorors over and over just to generate a pirate emperor and unlock the formation. 5. The male and female crusaders, from the Cumberland quest, are excellent units that also make excellent emperors/empresses. Get used to them! 6. Talk to every single NPC at least once. This is the only way to unlock certain parts of the world map. Even the most innocuous NPCs can accomplish this, so talk to them all. 7. HP is replenished after every battle, but MP and SP require sleeping or potions. You’ll have a lot of options in your storage as the game proceeds but it’s better to just take them all with you. There is a potion that restores LP but only use it if you desperately need to preserve a unit to pass on the techs they learn. 8. I recommend replacing the Heavy Infantry with a Brawler asap to start unlocking martial art techs. 9. If you mess up a game or unhappy with how it’s going, unequip everything from all your heroes and start a NG+ from your file. Just beat the Dread Queen - only took two tries. I actually did really, really well the second attempt and never even lost a unit. It was fun to play a fight really defensively when the rest of the game calls for so much offense. I only have two trophies left: make Copellia the Empress and beat the game without the final Empress. I’m nervous about the second one because it seems a lot can go wrong. I believe you can do whatever you want without issue until you’ve killed Bokohn, Wagnas, and Rocboquet. But after that it seems like a lot can go wrong and I don’t want to mess invest a lot of time in a beefy playthrough just to mess it up. Has anyone whose gotten the Other Legend trophy found a really good guide for it?

Here's my current path and also my frustration. 1. Complete Gerard Scenario. Begin a new generation. 2. Completed the Cumberland Civil War and Pirates of North Longit immediately (subdue the pirates). 3. Afterward, completed Hive Queen, Mermaid, Saigos Clan. Kill Robocquet. 4. No generation jump immediately after Robocquet, complete Volcano 1. Generation Jumps. 5. New generation only prompts Volcano II. Complete Volcano II. So now I'm trying to force a generation skip at the Towers of Terelutva. I thought if I completed 250 battles the generation would automatically advance upon the completion of a black-screen quest, but it's not working. I've killed hundreds of enemies and the generation won't jump no matter what I do. My emperor always just goes back to Avalon, leaving me with only Hero quests to advance. EDIT: I guess, rereading it, I need an event value of 8. Ugh. I am afraid to simply kill Wagnas or Bokohn because I don't want to paint myself into a corner with triggering sunken ship. Since Garon's Coup would to trigger after one hero and Sunken Ship would to trigger after the other one. I want to force another generation change before I get there and I can't get it to work. All the guides mention Garon's Coup starting after Robocquet/Volcano 1 and it never happens no matter what I do. I don't know why my generation won't jump after the Towers boss black screen. I've literally wasted days of playtime grinding battles to 250+ and it won't jump.

1. Don’t flee from battles. Enemy difficulty is determined by your battle count, so running from monsters will level them up and never level up you. So fight! 2. Magic is just extremely powerful and crucially important for the late game. Make a point to level Water, Fire, Earth, and Cosmology. All the way. Try to have at least two mages on every team, usually a dedicated mage and then a hybrid, and just level up those magics over and over again. 3. Only save money in the beginning of the game. Once you skip to your first random emperor, spend whatever you want. You will usually have tons and tons of money and nothing to even dream to spend it on. Just visit the orchard (which you build) periodically to increase its revenue, which also increases with battle count. 4. If the game is getting too hard and you’re really struggling, start a new game plus with your current save file. You keep all your global levels, inventory, storage, and money. This will give you a massive head start to get some edge and the game’s difficulty will balance back out as you progress. 5. Talk to every NPC. Talking to random people is the only way to access some parts of the map. 6. Use multiple saves so you can possibly reload a slightly older file and fix a mistake. If you die in a battle you didn’t want to die in, the game auto-saves and can be reloaded from the main menu. 7. Units will not learn new techniques if their skill menu is full. Delete skills you’re not using. 8. Never bother with shields. Ever. 9. When you get the option for a Pirate emperor, take it immediately just to unlock the Rapid Stream formation. Even if you go kill that emperor right away, Rapid Stream lets all your units attack first. It’s the best formation and you should have it ASAP. 10. Come back here and ask for help often. This game is very hard without tips and tricks! But once you figure it all out, it’s a romp.

1. Only buy things in Avalon as an emperor because they’re free that way. You might buy things as you adventure but generally there is no reason to. You will find much better equipment in your travels for free. 2. Invest in everything at the Blacksmith that isn’t a shield. This will make your recruits start with better equipment (after a generation hop). 3. Shields only give a defense bonus with their probability for activation occurs. So they only function 30-50% of the time. They also don’t work with two-handed weapons. That’s a waste of a slot. Crusaders from Cumberland get a free shield they can’t unequip, which is fine, but nobody else should bother. 4. Don’t equip gauntlets on anyone who uses a bow. It (supposedly) lowers your accuracy significantly. 5. Armor and weapons DO show stats and perks on the Equip screen. Just go for whatever has the higher number. But beware that heavier armor will make you move slower. This isn’t a huge concern, and doesn’t matter at all once you get Rapid Stream, but usually you want your healer to be really fast. Lighter armor is better on them. There’s a scale in the storage room but common logic applies here: metal is heavy, leather and robes are light. 6. It is hard to level up Earth and Magic because they’re defensive spells, but try anyway. Just spam them every free opportunity you have. You will get used to knowing when a battle will end in just one or two attacks and you get XP for moves you select even if they don’t actually happen. So even if you end a battle in one attack, everyone else will get XP for whatever you had selected. Use that to your advantage.

Hey, if I can do it, you can do it. I restarted seven times before I finally understood everything necessary to play it effectively. I loved it so much I just got the Platinum. You just gotta believe! Here’s another little tip: read about a quest before you complete it. There’s a good (not perfect, but good) guide on GameFAQs from a million years ago that will prepare you for certain quests where one wrong choice can fail the quest. Just knowing what you’re getting into, and what NOT to do, can help you a ton. Leaving Cumberland, for example, fails the Cumberland Quest. Killing the monster after the Slime in the Brawler Quest prevents them from ever joining you. Clicking the wrong icon on the map murders an entire village of people. This is a game where you will always want to know what you’re doing before you do it. It’s worth skimming the guide for any quest you’re about to do.

I keep reading over and over that the Maze doesn't count towards the battle counter but I don't think it's accurate. I did some battles in the Maze and it advanced my Orchard. I don't know what's going on here. Maybe they mean it doesn't contribute to enemy level scaling? If you keep playing and are getting 1-hit by everything, you'll know you've messed it up and probably can't continue. Enemies become more difficult for every battle you initiate - even if you Flee. So you can mess your game up by running from every enemy because you won't level up your characters in proportion to monster. Everything will just start killing you instantly. As for NG+, it's almost worth it to play the game partway through and then start over. You keep all your items, all your money, your global levels (which indicate the levels your units recruit at), and any magic you've unlocked. The extra momentum in the beginning makes all the difference in terms of how forgiving the game is towards failure and experimentation.

The bosses are designed for you to complete them in really any order, so you don't need to worry too much about how powerful the are. It's those random encounters that are going to ruin your life. My second hero was Bokohn, in the Savannah, but I had already built the College (different from the magical research center) which gave me access to the Tactician, which makes actually reaching Bokohn extremely easy. I'm trying to think who is most accessible at your point in the game and I honestly am not sure. I advanced several generations before I killed my second hero. Simply completing quests will also cause a generation change, so if you've done several (the ones that add areas to the map) you might just want to do a couple more of those.

I have a new problem, woohoo! After my last generation skip, my chancellor finally mentioned that the Armed Merchants broke their truce. I went to Molbelm, started the quest, took the land route into Nuono, got the jump on Garon, chased him to the house, fought his agents, and then... He runs off screen and disappears. The victory music plays and I get a trophy. Exiting the house and re-entering it resets the map and the allied pirate has taken Garon’s place. The scenario appears to be complete. But... the guide I was referencing says there’s supposed to be a secret passage under the fireplace where I’m supposed to follow Garon to his ship and get a battle ask and a Bard’s Bassoon. What went wrong? Why did the quest end?

Can anyone give me a tip for how to fine Muliay/Moulie? I know it’s in Saramat but I can’t find it. Also, I’ve noticed some chests that are open in certain places I’m visiting for the first time. I know the temple in the Salamander village has an open chest in it and the guide I’m reading mentions there should be an instrument in it. Don’t tell me I did something out of order and ruined the game again...

Just let myself get to the final Empress. 28 hours in. “Phew.” I have the whole map except for the Forgotten Town/Village as part of the Empire. You can’t bring that in though, can you? I want to make sure I have everything because there is a trophy connected to it. I’m a little over 1000 battles. I have no idea how I will possibly grind for 2000 to complete the Orchard. Unless I can Flee and it still counts? I suppose if I’m finished with the save file it won’t matter if I screw up the scaling. I would also love some suggestions for an End Game team. I’ve been using a Ninja, a Crusader F, a Technician, an an Imperial Guard M with my Empress as an Imperial Guard F. I know I will probably stick with the Final Empress and a Crusader F but, as much as I love the Ninjas, their Martial/Sword skillset isn’t as useful as it used to be. My last generation was really poorly optimized because I was grinding for skills and spells so I want to be confident that my final team has synergy. Any tips?

You can’t learn Fusion spells since they take a generation skip for the research to complete. So you have to initiate everything in your second to last generation. You can still make armor and weapons at the smith shop but it chances are they won’t make anything worth using this late in the game.

For my final party, I settled on... Empress Crusader M Crusader F Ninja Imperial Guard M Everyone has Galaxy. Three units have Elixir, three units have Crimson Flare, and I think two units have Dragon Pulse. Stone Shower is on every unit. My strategy is basically to overwhelm every possible enemy with magic. I haven’t unlocked Revive yet, but I hope to shortly. The Empress has the Amethyst Axe, Obsidian Spear, and Moonlite Sword. The Crusader M and the Imperial Guard have the Phantom Sword and Divine Spear respectively. Ninja has the Vorpal Sword. Crusader F has my most powerful axe, but I forget what it is. I’m nervous because this is it. The end. I still have a ways to go but I can’t be careless.

, every time you answer my questions, you prompt me to have more! 1. I haven’t been using epees literally at all because they seem to do abysmal damage. Is this normal? Should I be using them situationally? I equipped the first good rapier that you get (I think it’s the Lob Omen?) to my most powerful sword user and the damage is does is pathetic. I just forewent them entirely. 2. I haven’t had any practice with spears either because there basically aren’t any good spears in the early game. Is there a certain class recruit I should grab at the first generation shift to get the jump on that? 3. Are Crusaders the heroes for hire you can recruit as soon as Gerard replaces Leon? The ones you prove your worth to? If so, I didn’t realize they had their own formation. Am I mistaken? 4. For Fusion spells, you need casters who have the correct proficient in each spell, right? So I should always have a mage with Earth and Water together and Light and Fire together? 5. Do you know which classes can successfully eavesdrop on the ruffians in Molbelm for the Armed Mercenary quest? I know Thief is one of them - should I ever use a Thief?, thank you for your tips. Are Privateer and Crusader different classes? I keep getting so confused because some people operate off the fan translation and some people operate off the new and official one. Documentation on the game is very sparse and confusing when you can find it.

Restarted the other day and am making what feels like really comfortable progress. Leveling Earth magic is horrendously slow even when you have a designated caster. I’ve unlocked the third spell in Light, Water, and Air but somehow not Fire or Earth. Also I’ve been using a Brawler. Awesome class. Seems like I should replace my Heavy Infantry tank with a Brawler. But I also just unlocked the Saigon Clansman. Is this the class the fan translations refer to as Herders? I understand these are extremely tanky classes which unlock a slow defensive formation when you use one as an emporer. Is this formation good? If so, could I choose a Clansman as an emporer, unlock the formation, then go kill the Clansman and advance a generation? Essentially getting the formation for free without committing to it? This doesn’t seem like a great class for the emporer.

Is it possible to complete the Mermaid Quest and still initiate the Garon Ship Quest to add South Rongit to the empire? I’m currently at the final step of the Mermaid Quest. I either want to complete the quest and proceed to the next generation for the Garon Ship Quest (and add South Rongit to the empire) or I want to complete the Mermaid Quest and then reset to keep the completed potion. Romancing SaGa 2 doesn’t have a ton of text, and the story is rather light, but the writing is very strong. I am continually impressed by how the game works little flourishes of character and theme into the its sparse dialog system. I just had a moment where King Harold acknowledged my experience as a female empress and asked me to mentor his daughter because she will face additional scrutiny as a female ruler. Such a small line carries implications that help flesh out Princess Sophia, the city she successfully presides over, her father’s respect for her accomplishments, his respect for my Empress’s accomplishments, and the adversity the two them might face as Queens. I liked that a lot. I also loved, in the prologue, how Gerard is characterized as an intelligent and bookish boy who is not a gifted swordsman. Even though he can learn to fight physically, following in the footsteps of his brother, it’s clear systematically he makes for a superior mage. I like that his backstory and coming of age arc is reflected in his stats and attributes.

You will get better at avoiding them. They have quite precise hit-boxes and you can avoid battles with quick feet. Just don’t flee. Fleeing levels up your enemies cumulatively but doesn’t yield you XP at all. Most of the time, there’s only one monster in an entire area you actually have to fight. You can get away with only killing a few.

I reset my game 5 times before I finally understood enough of it to make a strong start. I honestly recommend it. It’s not uncommon for me to restart an RPG after a few hours to get a better jump on things but I’ve definitely done it with this game the most. Once you know what you’re doing, the game is really fun. My most necessary reset came after my fourth attempt, where I also made it the furthest. I had been strategically fleeing from all my battles as to make it back to where I was more quickly and to reroll encounters into easier fights. By the time I hit halfway through the second generational hop, the game was impossible to play. I’m really confused right now. So, this is my fifth time restarting the game because I kept learning things that I wanted to put into action from the outset. I started a new run and it was my best one yet. Tons of excellent Sparks, great enemy drops, great heir options, etc. It’s basically been a perfect run. When the time jump for Gerard originally happened, I immediately sat on the throne and initiated the construction of the magic university and the orchard. I’ve done this every time and every time the expansions have been built promptly. But I just cleared the Canal Fortress and had my first 85 year time jump and the expansions aren’t there. They still haven’t been built. Is something wrong? Is something broken? Why have I completed all these quests and the two expansions still not been built? I’m pretty stressed out about this because this was my perfect run! Am I just misremembering when these expansions appear? Will they show up after I complete another quest with an heir character? I wanted to teach my units magic immediately and start training for fusions and Stone Shower but I can’t do that if the college is missing. Does anyone have any insight on this?

How do you begin new developments for your kingdom? The first two things I built, the orchard and the magic school, were initiated sequentially by me sitting on the throne. But is there a more direct way of making this happen? It seems odd that I haven’t been prompted to build something else now that I’ve advanced a generation. Also, people keep referring to a Dojo where you can train units on special skills. Is this a development or is this a place I’m missing? Separately, it feels like I’m extremely under-leveled since I advanced a generation. Everything crushes me, but people said not to grind because enemies scale up. But a lot of things are killing me in one hit.

Okay - just started this and am really into it. But I have some questions before I press too far forward and mess up the good thing I have going. 1. What do I do when my units die permanently? Therese and James are very low on LP because I only just discovered what LP was and didn’t know how death operated mechanically. When they die, will they be replaced with nearly-identical units? Will Therese always yield another archer? 2. Is it ever advantageous to let Gerald die and start a new era? Should I preserve Gerald at all costs? 3. If someone dies, do I lose their equipment? 4. What are the benefits of these different weapons? Everyone right now has swords and are too far advanced with swords to justify using maces or cludges. How do I know when it is best to use each weapon? Is there a “weapon triangle” at all? 5. When do classes get introduced? I’ve just inherited Gerald’s father’s power. Am I still in the tutorial?

All right. I’m stuck doing the Thieves Guild quest, and from what I gather, I’ve made some sort of irreversible error. I’m extremely unhappy about this. I’ll put it in spoilers but this is really early in the game. Documentation for the game is very poor so I can’t find a solution to this problem. It sounds like that random guy killed the quest. I wasn’t trying to choose a deliberate method, I was just playing along and wanted to pay the guy and see what happened I can see there is another path on the bottom left of the Guild, but it’s blocked by an NPC. I’ll probably start over because everything I’m reading (which is admittedly not much) says there’s no other way into the Canal Fortress without beating down the wall in a grueling battle.

MAGA hats aren’t common where I live either, and half my state went for Trump. You see more bumper stickers than anything else. Every once and a while, out in the woods, you’ll drive by a house that has some sort of monument to Trump up - like a giant handmade sign that says “DRAIN THE SWAMP.” I don’t believe that people who wear MAGA hats are doing so casually. It’s not “just a hat.” At least, that’s not how I would perceive it around here. I think they wear them to remind other people who is in charge. I think they wear them because it makes them feel powerful. I think they know it will make people upset and that’s why they go out of their way to do it. It stands to reason that, in placed they know they are outnumbered, they would be less inclined to send those signals. But for others that might actually be a stronger incentive to do so. That would explain their rarity in places where we live. I don’t know how it varies regionally. I don’t see them often.

Hey everyone - first time posting in one of these threads. I’ve been playing a lot of Romancing Saga 2 on my Vita and have really loved it, which is usually what motivates me to go for Platinum. There are a couple extremely tough and complex trophies but I can see myself doing it so I’m going to push through. I don’t usually go for 100% on AAA games, but on smaller games like this, I usually enjoy the scope of the challenge more. What’s interesting about this release of RS2 is that they’ve turned what used to be exploits into achievements. One of them is to complete the game without the intended final-character using extremely specific and temperamental mechanics to trick the game into not advancing to the intended time period. This used to just be a trick people did for fun and to see what was possible and now it’s a trophy. That’s really cool to me. Wish me luck on that one. Documentation for the game is pretty light and guides for it make a lot of assumptions on player knowledge.

I am so stressed out that the canon name for the female trainer is apparently Selene. It's almost the same as Serena and I find this irreconcilable. Even with better names used in the marketing (hello Ailey), I will have to use Selene because that is the name given to the character and I am a slave to consistency. Maybe I'll use Mizuki, the Japanese name. It doesn't feel right using Moon again because we now know her name isn't Moon. This is terrible. Stop the world, I want to get off!

Every meaningful relationship I’ve ever had started at work. Some of them were co-workers and my SO now was a customer. From that I’ve learned that there’s nothing like a consistent mutual environment to bring people together. These relationships can be really successful, but they also carry really high risk, because something going wrong can really endanger that environment. You have to be responsible and professional and never create an uncomfortable work condition for them or anyone else. These kinds of relationships develop naturally. If you have to force them, you shouldn’t try. That’s my only experience. The times I tried my hardest to meet someone weren’t the times I was ever successful. This always sounds unhelpful when you’re single, but the best advice I can give is not to rush it. I was single for 18 months once. I sort of resigned myself to being single forever. Then I met my fiancée. We’ve been together for five years.

Friends, this is my first time posting in a queer community thread, and I have a question. I need some opinions. I am bisexual. This is something I know to be true. I'm sure this much I don't need to prove here. But I have never been with a man. I just never met one. I sort of dated a guy for a few months but it wasn't sexual and we stopped seeing each other when it got "too weird." I have only had sex with women my whole life and now I am engaged to a woman (whom I love very much - there is no dissatisfaction there.) Most people know me as a straight man. I present as a straight man and generally have no reason to tell anyone I am bisexual. It's just not a topic of conversation and will not be really ever again because I'm getting married. Being bisexual is still part of my identity, however, because it motivates me politically. I like being part of the LGBT+ community. I like queer fiction and activism and history and want to take ownership of it as "my culture." But I feel an immensely guilty in doing so because I feel like I'm not... queer enough. Because the queer aspect of my sexuality has never been exercised, I feel like it's unproven. Because I can masquerade indefinitely as a straight man, I am immune to the hardship that my brothers and sisters endure. I feel like any effort to be part of the queer community will be met with skepticism. And I can't even blame people. For all intents and purposes I am a straight man with some queer tastes and a hidden infatuation with dick. As a result, I just don't talk about it. I don't come to these community threads and I don't tell other queer folk I am queer because I don't want to seem disingenuous. People always treat me like I'm pretending. The only kinship I've ever been assured of is that this is how most bisexuals feel. But I never meet them. I never get to talk to them. I just see their Tweets and Tumblr posts. I am having trouble mitigating the guilt I have that I am queer with none of the baggage. I don't know if I should just stay out of it and be an ally or if there is a legitimate place for me in the community. I don't think I can figure this out on my own anymore, I really need to hear what other queer people think. I am fine with whatever people say but I really need input. What am I? Am I queer or am I just an ally?

I know this , it's just been hard to join conversations and communities because I wasn't sure how I would be received. Which leads me to... ...this here. Ultimately, I know what I am and who I am. I define me - but I am also defined by my relationships. I do have some gay friends they're great for perspective but being queer among predominantly straight people who treat me like I'm straight means there is a part of my personality I'm never really nourishing. But before I can connect with people over this, I want to know other people will see me the way I see me. Thankfully, my fiancée knows. It was something she immediately accepted because she always believed in the fluidity of sexuality anyway. I am grateful I do not need to hide it from her. We probably wouldn't be getting married if I had to. But I gotta say, I'm just so glad to finally talk to somebody else about passing privilege and coming to terms with bisexuality once you've chosen a life partner. Super Smash Bros has the incredible and uncanny potential to make obscure characters superstars - even if they’re not in the game, apparently. Simply the existence of Super Smash Bros and SmashBoards catapulted Geno into Smash culture and lore. The fact he actually made a costume appearance after all those years is simply surreal. I don’t think people actually understand how surreal it is. He is a party member from a Mario RPG on the SNES. Imagine if some random Paper Mario partner had this sort of following. Imagine if people fought and posted and voted for years and years and years until Vivian from The Thousand Year Door got a Mii costume in Smash 4. It is a testament to the sheer force of will this community has.

For the entirety of 1998 and most of 1999, I played only two video games in tandem with one another. Those games were Super Mario 64 and Pokémon Red. Back then, when there were fewer games to play and you had no access to the internet, a single video game might last you months or even years. This comment is common among fans of oldschool PC adventure games, but it was a reality for a lot of players at the time. Not everyone spent this much time playing single games, but it was far from uncommon either. Furthermore, on consoles especially, there were often genre-leading games that knew no parallel or competition. Before the likes of DK64 and Banjo Kazooie, there was ONLY Super Mario 64. That meant, if you wanted to play a 3D platformer, you just replayed Super Mario 64. Hundreds of hours may seem like an exaggeration or a marketing point, but as someone who spent that time personally, I can attest to the possibility.

If we erase TP Zelda, what will we leave for our children? Is nothing sacred? ALttP Zelda is cool, though. I used to like that Zelda/Link/Ganondorf had uniform depictions from the same games but the depictions they went with this time spanning multiple generations of the series is definitely interesting. I think it makes them look a lot less cohesive and a bit more random, but I think I just have to get used to it.

P.T. was an extremely unique and promising experience. P.T. wasn’t just “a demo”, it was a completely experimental marketing format. The game had, and continues to have, an influence on the horror genre as a whole. Considering the game is now largely inaccessible and the cat is out of the bag in reference to what it actually was, some of the magic will never be replicated, but the fact it still captures so much passion and attention from fans is a testament to how much it impressed the people who played it. This is crazy to really meditate on because of how much I take Smash movesets for granted. Some character depictions are so normalized for me that I no longer consider their faithfulness. I tend to with newer characters, but it’s not like I ever complained about Captain Falcon or Pit.

Not hating on Pac-Man, but I think he has a really forced and unnatural moveset. His concepts feel like ideas for a Smash fighter with no suitable inspiration for combat. Visually he looks just like he should, but Pac-Man’s moveset isn’t something I will ever like. I really don’t like playing as him. I don’t think there are any other fighters I feel that way about.

Thinking about Sakurai's Famitsu column where he talks about the size of the Smash roster becoming unsustainable... I remember thinking after Smash 4 that the roster couldn't get much bigger. Certain characters would be deemed non-essential and drop out of fighter representation. With a roster this size, it's an unfortunate fact that some characters will be less popular and underplayed and the investment required to bring them forward would be too high. Smash 4 launched with some really difficult cuts. No Ice Climbers. No Lucas. No fabled return of Mewtwo. It was hard because Super Smash Bros doesn't feel like a fighting game where characters naturally cycle in and out. Every character feels important. The fact they made it into Super Smash Bros is a big deal. After this game, we will need to accept again that certain characters will be retired. Certain friends might not come back. This reprieve from the pain of loss is not permanent. It is bittersweet this game is happening because it means we will have 5+ years to get attached to these fighters again and not know who we'll lose. We are getting back characters many of us made peace with never seeing again. Super Smash Bros has always been a series of possibility and challenging player expectations, but in the future, we will need to do the responsible thing and accept that nothing is really forever. Certainly not everyone will feel the same as I do. I understand that. There are characters I'm okay with letting go too. I have no real love for Dark Pit. But there are characters I like a lot that I will be sad to see go. It was hard enough the first time.

This is a HUGE factor. Nobody is going to take issue with sexualized characters in a game that is expressly designed to be titillating. Games like Dead or Alive, or even Skull Girls, are immediately up front with their intentions. These characters are not out of place and are completely on-tone with the material itself. These games are supposed to be sexy, so it makes sense for the characters to be depicted as such. This is something Persephone talks about in the OP: there is nothing unusual or off-tone about a girl in a bikini on the beach. It unusual when they're a genetically-modified super soldier flitting between strapped male cast members not subject to the same aesthetic and nothing about their design speaks to the plot, tone, or themes of the encompassing material. Even separate from the nuance of sexism and the politics of it, it's just terrible writing. I'm going to test out a parallel. This is not directed at you specifically, I'm just using your post as a springboard. Imagine if Saving Private Ryan featured a handful of characters in clown make up. Everything else is the same. The story, the characters, the heartache, the violence, the storming the beach at Normandy, all of this is the same. But every so often, there's a clown. They solemnly make balloon animals, they get into spats with Tom Hanks about why Private Ryan is worth all of their lives, and their shoes squeak when they march. Sometimes a clown is the only one on screen and they juggle for a few seconds before the story moves forward. People would complain. They would say these clowns are ruining the story. There's no reason for them to be there. They don't add anything and are really distracting. You can't take the story seriously when Vin Diesel is in white pancake make up and Matt Damon has a red foam nose. They completely compromise the integrity of the narrative. Now imagine that every time you say the clowns ruined Saving Private Ryan, you got replies like this: "What's wrong with clowns?" "Steven Spielberg can puts clowns in his movies if he wants." "I don't have a problem with it. I clowns." "Clowns are really popular in Japan." All of these comments miss the point entirely. The problem isn't just clowns, it's where and how they appear. They are totally at odds with the material and cater to an extremely specific audience while alienating everyone else. There is nothing wrong with a clown appearing in a story , but there is a problem with clowns appearing in Saving Private Ryan. So you have no problems with sexualized characters and you don't have a grasp on the semantics of misogyny and your favorite video game characters are the ones you think are hot, you should at least be able to concede that there is a time and a place and characters like Quiet break context. And however annoying it is for men like me, it's all worse for women, who are more directly affected by these portrayals.

The single greatest failing with Quiet is that Metal Gear Solid used to write incredible roles for women, especially relative to the years they came out. They were data analysts, they were spies, they scientists, they were doctors, they were soldiers, they were weapons experts, and they had goals and ambitions and purpose beyond titillation. Metal Gear Solid, the first game in particular, wrote the kinds of female characters you couldn't find anywhere else in gaming. While there were still sexy characters like Sniper Wolf, they were not without their characterizations and they were counterbalanced by a large cast of well-written women. As the series went on, these kinds of roles decreased. They were written out or given to men. By the time we get to Metal Gear Solid V, the most prominent (and one of the only) female characters in the game is a nearly-nude honey pot who literally does not speak. She is there to be seen, not heard. In a story about soldiers and corruption and dark actualization of wartime politics, the lead female is relegated to slinking around in the rain. Nothing about her design is justified or makes sense in the context of the story and it sends a message. It tells women that these stories are not for you. They're for boys. While all the male characters are there to tell a meaningful story, Quiet is there to crawl around in a bathing suit. So yeah, of course Kojima can tell a story about whatever he wants. There aren't rules about what kinds of stories people should tell. But it reflects poorly on Kojima that this is his idea of a meaningful female character that will make us "ashamed of our words and deeds." It's embarrassing. I don't fault you for liking Quiet. Quiet exists, she's out there, like her or not. But it's very unfortunate that a series once famous for women in STEM now focuses on sex objects who can't talk.

Most of the time, it's because writers and designers just don't know how to create a female character. They aren't friends with women, they don't work with women, they don't speak extensively with women, and their most regular exposure to women and femininity comes from media written by other men designed for men to consume. This happens a lot in male-dominated societies. When the only women you speak to extensively are the ones you're sleeping with, you become unable to portray or even understand women in any other context beyond your attraction to them. So when writers start laying out a story, they automatically write characters as male. They don't even think about it. When the story needs a best friend or a manager or a shopkeeper or police officer, they are automatically male whether the author is consciously creating them as such or not. This is how entire stories get written without a single female character (Lawrence of Arabia, for example, features no speaking female characters whatsoever). But most writers are conscious enough to realize they haven't written any women, so they add Because the only way they understand female characters is in relation to the male ones they've already created, the female character usually becomes an accessory. A wife, a daughter, a love interest, etc. This is why, famously, most women who have won Oscars win them for playing wives. This is also why women often don't talk to each other or share scenes with each other because they're only there for male characters to talk to. This is how their roles are written. And since the first thing male writers usually think about women is how hot they may or may not be, it comes through in the writing almost immediately. There is a funny, and also sad, that mostly dedicated to female character intros in scripts written by men. Here is an example: Even men capable of writing terrific, complex, and interesting characters fall into this trap of writing shitty women because they so strongly associate them with sex that they don't know any other way to introduce them. When it comes to video games, which are often designed independently from a legitimately ambitious story, characters are designed with even less connective tissue. The becomes the stand-in for a male main character, even when a male main character exists, so the designers write roles for how they relate to an assumed male player. This is why they are disproportionately young girls who need protecting or sex objects for lusting over (or both). Truthfully, female character designs and legitimate female characterizations have gotten way better over the last few years. But the problems they've always faced, in every medium, still persist. There are sexualized female characters that are still good and interesting leads (Bayonetta, 2B) and there is absolutely a place for characters like this. The issue is proportion, or more accurately disproportion, and how frequently overly objectified female are there specifically to ellicit erections instead of emotions.
